A crown is a tooth-shaped cap cemented over the whole visible part of a tooth, above the gumline. It restores the appearance and the function of a damaged tooth and protects what is left of it from further damage.
Placing a crown usually takes two visits. A portion of the tooth is shaped to make room, the crown is made to fit it, and it is then bonded into place with a dental adhesive. You go home with instructions on how to look after it.
A bridge spans the gap left by a missing tooth when there are healthy natural teeth on either side of it. Bridges can be permanent or removable. In most cases the neighbouring teeth are prepared with crowns so that they can carry the bridge, and the whole thing is made to match the teeth around it.
If a tooth is missing rather than damaged, a dental implant may hold the replacement without touching the teeth either side. Which is better depends on the bone, the bite and the neighbouring teeth, and that is what the examination is for.
